5. Water Conservation
Back to Eco-Practices

Fresh water is finite and constitutes less than 3 percent on Earth.
Much of the fresh water sources are confined in glaciers, icecaps, or deep in the earth. Depletion of water could generalize habitat degradation.
A decrease in fresh water supplies will have negative effects in the environment due to the following scenarios:
Increment of pollution from over-irrigation of agricultural and urban lands.
Construction of supplementary water and wastewater treatment facilities.
More demand of energy for the treatment of wastewater and byproducts.

Conservation of water by:
  a. Reducing consumption
  b. Monitoring and quality control of wastewater

TIPS:

• Encourage guests to reuse linens and towels after using once.

• Don't run dishwashers and washing machines half full. Use the maximum recommended capacity.

• Install efficient showerheads, faucet aerators in sinks, and low-flow toilets.

• Monitor and maintenance of leaky faucets, toilets, showerheads, and pipes.

• Educate employees on water conservation measures, such as turning off water while washing hands.

• Install signs that encourage water conservation in bathrooms and work areas.

• Water plants and gardens in the morning or at night to prevent evaporation.

• Plant native plants adapted to the local climate and rainfall.

• Use mulch around plants and trees to retain moisture.

• Reuse wastewater or reclaimed water for landscape irrigation, agricultural irrigation, aesthetic uses such as fountains, and fire protection.

• Collect rainwater or irrigation runoff for reuse.

• Use biodegradable laundry and dishwashing products
