TIPS:
.• Control pests with ladybugs. These
little red insects with shiny black spots
control aphids naturally and totally. You
can order them from several organic garden
places on the Internet. Until they arrive,
spray every part of aphid-infested plants
with well diluted soapy water. Rinse with
clear water.
• Plant guardian plants around and
among tender vegetables. Marigolds make
the organic garden border colorful, and
ward off many pests. Onions and garlic are
also great deterrents to pests that would
like to break in and steal organic produce.
• Take the advantage of preparing
your own compost from non-protein organic
food waste. Make your own compost bin using
a wooden frame.
• Collect grass, flower clippings,
dead leaves and weeds for the compost bin.
You can also use veggie peels and scraps,
tea leaves and even torn newspapers.
• Alternate layers of garden waste,
food scraps with a thin layer of soil. Keep
it moist and compost every 1 - 3 weeks with
a shovel.
• Use organic fertilizers for vigorous
plant growth.
• Water if necessary only in the
morning or at night to prevent evaporation.
• Consider the possibility of communal
composting and garden space with your neighbors
or local council.
• Be part of a community supported
agriculture or organic farming network.
